CYCLONE DUALS

At Saturday's second annual Cyclone Duals Wrestling Tournament, Eastern View and Stafford went 1-2 for the second time in two years.
But unlike last year’s event, when Stafford toppled Eastern View for the first-place hardware, the Cyclones exacted some revenge against the Indians and claimed the honors.
In the tournament that featured 12 teams divided into three pools of four, both Eastern View and Stafford, along with the other pool winner, Stonewall Jackson, advanced to the championship pool.
After Stafford defeated Stonewall, Eastern View and Stafford faced off with first place on the line.
Eastern View pulled ahead for good when Jordan Minor (195) won by fall, and three bouts later, Yarhoski Aldiva (106) put the finishing touches on the Cyclones’ 40-27 victory when he pinned his opponent.
Getting the win over Stafford and taking home the first-place trophy had the taste of sweet revenge.
“Last year, Stafford beat us for first place,” said Eastern View assistant coach Eddie Jenkins. “That match came down to the last couple of bouts.”
  But not Saturday’s.
And in the finale, Eastern View pummeled Stonewall Jackson to complete a perfect 5-0 record on the day.
Individually, the Cyclones had five wrestlers go unbeaten, including Aldiva, Bryan Ramey (113), Tony Pritt (132), Austin Jenkins (138/145), Logan Shurina (150) and Minor.
Shurina reached a personal milestone when he claimed career win No. 100 during Eastern View’s romp over Liberty-Bealeton, 76-6.
From Eastern View’s opening blitz past Riverbend, 72-6, its pasting of W.T. Woodson, 63-12, then Liberty, Stafford and Stonewall Jackson, the team looked like it had plenty left in the tank.
Coaches Jenkins and Eric Brown are known for their conditioned teams.
And Pritt was just one of several Cyclones who still had more than enough to continue.
“I give the coaches the credit for that,” said Pritt.
The Cyclones are now 15-0 on the season after going 10-0 at the season opener in Hedgesville, W.Va.
The other teams in the tournament included Madison County, Spotsylvania, Jefferson Forest, Henrico and Gar-Field.
Madison County went 1-4 with its only win over Gar-Field, 51-19.  After that, the team fell to Henrico, 38-26, Stafford, 72-12, Jefferson Forest, 51-27, and W.T. Woodson, 38-36.
For the Mountaineers, Gabe Farmer (195/220) went 3-1, and JP Utz (220) and Logan Carpenter (170) missed the first three rounds due to ACT testing, but joined the team in time for the placement rounds and both went 2-0.
In addition to Eastern View and Stafford’s one-two finish, the tournament also awarded “Outstanding Wrestler” in the lightweight, middleweight and upper-weight divisions.
Eastern View’s Ramey won the lightweight honor, C.D. Hylton’s Cody Bowers (170) won in middleweight and Stafford’s Caleb Houston (182) the upper weight.
Though Stafford and Eastern View recently began a rivalry, the wrestlers have some previous history competing against each other on the mats.
“Stafford’s wrestlers came up competing for the Powerhouse youth team,” said Jenkins, “and our kids came up with the Culpeper Cobras. Both teams are in the Beltway League.”
The Cyclones are scheduled to compete in next weekend’s Holiday Duals at the Richmond Center.
After back-to-back weekends of going 1-4, the Mountaineers are now 2-8 on the season, and return to action next Saturday at Culpeper County High School for Culpeper Duals.

CAVALIER CLASH

By Scott Tucker
Caroline and King George results:
106-N/A
113-2nd Michael Shook(CAR),  Matt Hall(KG) 0-2
Shook pinned his way to the finals before getting majored by AAA  Shumate(Patrick Henry-ASH)
120-Kirk Hunter(KG) 1-2, Mason Hall(CAR) 0-2
126-2nd Jimmy Mclure(CAR), Trevor Smith(KG) 1-2.  These two squared off in the opening round with Mclure picking up the major.
132-1st Ben Crawfor(CAR), 3rd Andy Snyder(KG). These two met up in the semi's(perhaps should of been the finals) with Crawford winning 14-7. The match was much closer then the 7 point difference as Snyder got 5 pointed at the very end going for broke.
138-2nd Shae Hazelwood(KG), 3rd Josh Zelenick(CAR). Zelenick was on the tougher side of the bracket.
145-3rd Luke Price(CAR)
152-3rd Kyle Kraisser(KG), Hunter Halvorsen(CAR) 1-2
160-3rd Donald Harris-Smith(CAR), Ron Bell(KG) 1-2
170- 2nd Jacob Tucker(KG), 4th Cody Kidd(CAR) Folks these two young men deserve some credit here because this was no ordinary weight class for a small weak tournament like this.  When a AAA state qualifier goes down in the 1st round of an 8 man bracket; YOU HAVE A WEIGHT TO KEEP AN EYE ON.  "#7 seed" Corey Hubbard(Lakeland) was the most "jacked" 170 pounder I have ever seen. He majored Jake Harris(Patrick Henry-ASH) a "AAA state qualifier last season", pinned Cody Kidd(CAR) in under a minute, and kept Jacob Tucker(KG) scoreless at 7-0.  Apparently this kid was injured at the District tournament last year and flew under the radar. Tucker and Kidd did not face off. Although Tucker has beat Jake Harris twice in the past and Harris Pinned Kidd for 3rd/4th.
182-Zach King(KG) 1-2, Jacoby Garnett(CAR) 1-2. These 2 did not wrestle each other.
195-This is going to sound bizarre but I will explain: 3rd place-Chuck James(KG) 1-2 and wrestled to 4th. Aaron Teague(CAR) 1-1. Teague and a Fork Union kid double DQed in the semi's. The forfeit moved down to James waiting in the con-semis. James loses in the con finals and gets 3rd. The patrick henry kid gets 2nd. And a king William kid won in the finals by forfeit.
220-Neil Carter(CAR) either got 3rd or 4th.
285-Regen Clark(KG) 1-2, Logan Huffard(CAR) 0-2.
