Holiday Schedule(with follow up)

Eastern View will be traveling up to the "Willie Walthers" Tournament at James Wood High school.  I personally have been to this tournament in the past and can say that it brings a nice mix of styles to the table. Teams from different VA classes along with some WV will contend.

King George and newly added Spotsylvania will travel up to Stone Bridge in Loudoun County to take part in the "Bull Dog Inv."

Courtland and Culpeper already competed in the "Mountaineer Duals" at Madison County High School on the 23rd. There was a small write up but nothing worth blogging about.

Culpeper has a 2nd holiday tournament to attend. They will make a short trek over to Fauquier where they will compete in a very tough field at the "Fauquier Duals".

Caroline competed in the Atlee Duals in Richmond. There were very spotty results at best. From the best of my knowledge, they did not win any matches.

Chancellor-Battle at the Bridge.

JAMES WOOD INVITATIONAL
Eastern View finished as runner-up in the team standings out of 17 teams hailing from Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
The Cyclones placed seven out of its 11 wrestlers in the meet held in Winchester.
The following wrestlers place in the top four for Eastern View.
106: Bryan Ramey 3–1, second place; 126: Kevin Willems 3–1, second place; 138: Austin Jenkins 3–1, second place; 152: Logan Shurina 5–1, third place; 120: Nathaniel Aldiva 3–2, fourth place; 132: Tony Pritt 3–2, fourth place; 145: Jamey Lynch 3–2 , fourth place).
James Wood's smallest starter showed how tough he is as well Thursday. Eastern View's Brian Ramey needed just seven seconds to drop Woznak in the 106-pound final for a takedown. But when regulation was over, Ramey was still looking for another point in a match that was square at 2-2.

"I just had to keep on wrestling hard," said Woznak, the younger brother of former Colonels' girls' soccer star Cat Woznak. "I wasn't going to let that first takedown decide the match."

After a scoreless first overtime, Ramey chose the down position for the second overtime. Woznak and Ramey eventually wound up on the edge of the mat, and with two seconds left Woznak was credited with a two-point near fall after a tilt.

Ramey immediately escaped to make it 4-3 heading into the final 30-second overtime, but Woznak made that advantage hold up and was credited with a 5-3 win.

CHA 1st, CUL 5th @ Blue Devil INV.

At Saturday’s annual Blue Devil Invitational Wrestling Tournament, host Culpeper opted to change the format from a team tournament to an individual one.
But individually the only Blue Devil to advance to the championship finals was Jared Engh.
The talented sophomore knew he would have his hands full with Chancellor’s Evan Jeffords, a two-time Battlefield District champion, last year’s Region I runner-up and fourth-place finisher at the Group AA state meet.
Engh described Jeffords as a technician, but like any good wrestler Engh went in with a plan.
“He’s very smart and he has good technique,” said Engh of Jeffords, “but he is not very physical.  I have to be strong and beat on him and try to make him quit.  I need to bring down the hammer on him.”
Engh brought down the hammer but also employed some excellent technique en route to his electrifying win by decision, 8-6, to win the title at 132 pounds.
“Wrestling is an aggressive sport,” said Engh, “but it’s also like a chess match.  The things you do early on set the tone.  I broke his morale.”
Of Culpeper’s wrestlers, Engh advanced the farthest, and the Blue Devils finished fifth in the eight-team event with 86 points.
Defending Battlefield District champion Chancellor claimed the team trophy with 231.5 team points, 13.5 better than runner-up Salem-Virginia Beach, which had 218 points.  York came in third with 188 points, followed by Brooke Point, 128, Culpeper, 86, Louisa County 55.5, Albemarle, 44, and Riverbend 31.
The tournament awarded medallions to the top four wrestlers in each weight class, plus three Outstanding Wrestler Awards for the lower, middle and upper weight class divisions.
Engh was a unanimous pick as the Outstanding Wrestler in the lower weight classes, or from 106 through 138 pounds.
Salem’s Zach Kechter (145) won the award for the middleweight class divisions and teammate Jeff Stephens (195) won the award for the upper weight classes.
No doubt, Engh’s  win over Jeffords is the biggest of his career so far.
“Definitely,” he said.  “I wasn’t on his radar.  I know he’s seen me wrestle but I guarantee you he didn’t think I could beat him.”
Engh had to overcome a couple of first period takedowns by Jeffords to get the win.
Jeffords scored an early takedown and Engh managed an escape to make it 2-1. Jeffords scored another takedown and looked for early control, but Engh scored another escape and then surprised Jeffords with one of his own takedowns late in the first period, and then three back points that turned out to be pivotal to the outcome.
In the second period, Jeffords had choice and deferred and Engh chose the bottom position.
Jeffords denied Engh an escape or reversal but trailed Engh 7-4 when the second period expired.
Jeffords chose down in the third and scored a reversal to trail 7-6 but because he could not turn Engh to his back, he conceded an escape in hopes of exchanging it for a takedown.  After he turned Engh loose, Jeffords trailed 8-6 and sought a takedown to tie the match, but Engh deftly thwarted the attack and prevailed, 8-6.
The home crowd erupted in approval as Engh claimed a solo crown for his team.
Other Blue Devils participated in the mix but did not place including Dillon Kincaid (106), Laurel Engh (132), Dartagnan Dwyer (145), Nick Moneta (152) and Dakota Brackenridge (182).
Missing from the lineup were David Counts (120), Cody Vick (182), Sergio Alvarez (170) and Chris DeJarnette (220).
Though she did not place in the tournament, Laurel Engh pulled off what may have been the biggest comeback win of the tournament. It came during the consolation quarterfinals when she trailed York’s Jack Austin late in the match, 11-3.
Out of nowhere, Engh completed a roll, put Austin on his back, and secured the fall with less than a minute remaining.
She had a simple explanation for why she thought she prevailed.
“I wanted it more,” said the Culpeper senior.  “I finally hit a roll after I clamped down on the elbow.  He was going for a half [nelson] at the time.”
The Blue Devils return to action next Friday when they travel to Madison to compete in the annual “Mountaineer Duals” where action is expected to begin at 10 a.m.

CAR 2nd, KG 4th @ Montrosity

Caroline was able to knock off AAA Dinwiddie to win there pool and advance the finals of the Montrosity Dual Tournament where they were upended by host school Washington & Lee  47-27.

King George was 2nd in there pool losing to Washington & Lee 54-28, and then giving way to Dinwiddie in the Trophy round.

A couple of KG kids were able to knock off some ranked Single A kids of Washington & Lee.

Bryson Howard(KG) used a great double leg takedown attack to wear down  Sam Mcgill(WL) by major decision 17-8.
Jacob Tucker(KG) was in route to a tech fall before sealing down the pin against Michael Clayton(WL)  at the 5:42 mark.

Michael Clayton was able to beat Donald "Naquan" Harris-Smith(CAR) in dramatic fashion. Trailing by 2 with less then 10 seconds left; Clayton managed to hit a reversal and put Smith to his back for the victory.

Side note: Caroline has improved tremendously.

Southampton Vs Franklin(Single A)

Southampton High School’s wrestling team defeated visiting Franklin 48-29 during the annual daytime match in front of the student body.
The five Indians who pinned Franklin wrestlers were Tim Mason at 138 pounds, French foreign exchange student Frank LeMat at 145, DaQuan Cotton at 152, Sam McDonald at 182 and KaMontae Blunt at heavyweight.
Other winners by decisions were brothers SeQuan and Devine Fenter, at 120 and 132 pounds, respectively, and Dustin Corbin at 220.
First-year Southampton Head Coach William “Buddy” Whitehurst expects a competitive year as long as his wrestlers can make weight.
“They’re training real hard to lose weight and stay in shape,” said Whitehurst, who replaced Vernon Bryant at the helm. “We’ve got three or four moves we can rely on so we should be competitive. We’ve got some pretty tough guys.”
The win improves Southampton’s record to 3-3.
The Indians will travel to Sussex for a 5 p.m. match on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

Good Coaching or bad?

Personally, this short article makes me want to vomit.

These Caroline parents need to get a clue. They are the corner stone of whats wrong with this country.

Pointing the finger desperately  anywhere but where it needs to be to make up for there own lack of parenting. Shame on you.

CHA dominates CUL and KG- 12/14/11

The rap music was blaring, the Run-DMC gold chains were sported, the dry ice was pumping smoke, and the Chargers made there dramatic entry. They did not disappoint there home crowd on Senior night.

Chancellor loses only 2 individual matches the entire evening! Tucker(KG) and Dejarnette(CUL) were the only two outside of Chancellor to win all there matches.

Notable matches:
126-Caffiero(CH) dec Moy(CUL) 6-5
132-Garratte(CH) dec J.Enge(CUL) 8-6 OT
145-Dwyer(CUL) dec Howard(KG) 10-9
170-Tucker(KG) dec Rathbone(CH) 11-4

Mat Notes:

  • Weigh-ins were done properly. Very nice!
  • Until the battlefield changes the district seeding criteria, we will continue to see coaches protect there wrestlers in whatever way they can and I can't say I blame them either. There were 2 very nice match-ups I was anticipating last night and did not get to see.
  • Tri matches suck! Quads only next year.

***Updated Rankings***

I cant figure out how to move posts up or down.

You can click on the "november"  link on the right to either expand your view or follow the link to november to view updated rankings.

Things seem to be taking shape.

Ultimately, I anticipate weight shifting probably all the way up until the district seeding meeting but for now its starting to take a pretty clear view.

Chancellor: Does Rathbone beat Upperco once he gets to 170? They also seem to have settled there 130(s) log jam.

Eastern View: My gut (coaching)instinct at the beginning of the year told me Shurina 145,   Layher 152 to optimize post season performance. After really being able to study the Cyclones: Shurina goes where he wants and I am not sure Layher can beat Lynch. Especially by the end of the season. Log jams sure are a nice problem to have from a coaching stand point.  I think the lineup we see now is here to stay

Caroline: Naquan Smith has cut the weight but if he can't beat Layher Wednesday night then does he stay?

Courtland-has some serious fire power not in the lineup. Do they get them back?

King George-Can they get rid of the injury bug thats biting most of the team?

Culpeper- Is there open enrollment in this county like Stafford County? Just curious if the blue devils benefit at all from the Cobras?

Southampton- I understand why they will enter our tournament and agree with the decision but it is just weird trying to filter a team into a tournament where the is zero knowledge about them.

EV 2nd, KG 6th at Cyclone Duals- 12/10/11

Eastern View was 2 points away from winning the inaugural Cyclone Duals. The Indians of Stafford rattled off 5 straight pins in the upper weights  to put a stranglehold on the Championship trophy.

King George was without  120-Snyder, 145-Hinkes, 152-Webb, 160-Fisk, 195-Garrant/King. While some kids have legitimate injuries, some are finding excuses to sit out. Its been a VERY long time since KG has had 16 matches this early in December (If ever).

I find it interesting that the kids making it through are the young ones that have no clue that 16 matches thus far is a great start  to the season. The coaching staff at KG has taken great steps towards doing the things it takes to become successful; which is truly a culture shock for some of the kids that have been around a while.

Notebook:
106-Ramey(EV) 5-0 w/ 3 falls, and a major. I personally have yet to see this freshman get challenged. He is as electrifying as his shoes and going to make some serious noise come post season.
113-Quesh(EV) 4-1 w/ 3 falls. Pretty solid day. Had his hands full against Stafford.
120-Aldiva(EV) 4-1 w/ a fall, major, and couple of forfeits. Was pinned by the Christiansburg JV kid. Umm, a JV kid that could probably place in the state.
126-Willums(EV) 4-1 w/ 2 falls and 2 forfeits. Lost 13-3 to Christiansburg JV.
138-Jenkins(EV) 5-0 w/ 3 falls, a real gritty OT win, and a forfeit. Still undefeated for the year and looking good.
145-Lynch(EV) 4-1 w/ 2 falls, decision, and a forfeit. I didn't get to see the match where he was pinned against  Jefferson Forest but I do know that JF's middle-upper weights were stacked.
152-Shurina(EV) 4-1 w/ 4 falls. Lone loss came from a rematch of last years 1st round of the State tournament. The only difference is that Josh Bowyer(JF) had at least 10 pounds on him this year.
160-Layher(EV) 5-0 w/ 3 falls and 2 forfeits. Probably should of been 4-1 and Shurina 5-0 but benefited from the jefferson forest forfeit at 152. Had a nice come from behind pin against Stafford.
170-Tucker(KG) 4-1 w/ 3 falls and a 6-3 dec. Lone loss came from  Alex Cox(JF). Hung tough until a critical mistake was made and the 2011 state qualifier made him pay for it. Very undersized in this match much like the Bowyer(JF)/Shurina(EV) match up.
220-Layher(EV) 4-1 w/ 1 fall and 3 forfeits. Very close to being 5-0 but couldn't quite get the fall against Stafford and ended up getting pinned in a slug fest. This is another freshman that is going to be something special.

On a side note: I would like to let the EV guys know that it was a class act to give District mate KG there own mat for the day.

CUL, EV, KG, SPO Quad- 12/8/11

Pretty good night of wrestling considering you needed a canoe to get home.

The following are the recognized rules and policies of the Virginia High School League regarding weigh-ins:

For a Dual Meet (NFHS Rule 4-5-1), contestants of the same gender shall have the opportunity to weigh in shoulder-to-shoulder, a maximum of one hour before the time of a dual meet, or a team’s first competition each day in a multiple dual-meet event is scheduled to begin. When a preliminary meet is followed by a varsity meet weigh-ins may, by mutual consent, precede the preliminary meet.

The Snyder(KG) vs Aldiva(EV) match was by far the best match of the night.

I think the freshman Layher(EV) upset Dejarnette(CUL) last night at 220.

3 match winners:
106-Ramey(EV)
113-Questch(EV)
120-Snyder(KG)
126-Willums(EV) I think?
132-J.Engh(CUL)
138-Jenkins(EV)
145-Lynch(EV) This kid has thoroughly impressed me. I love the intensity combined with the mat awareness.
152-Shurina(EV)
160-Layher(EV)
170-Tucker(KG)
182-Vick(CUL) I think. Might have been a 3 way split.
195-Culpeper kid(I think)
220-Layher(EV)
285-Pollard(EV)

EV 3-0
CUL 2-1
KG  1-2
SPO 0-3

Pondering a thought about 2 day tournaments

Are they worth it anymore? The mat time is excellent (in most cases) but I was thinking:  With the new Optimal weight garbage; I don't think there is a wrestler in the country that is allowed to lose a pound per day.  Although when we wrestle a two day tournament we are allowed to gain a pound in a day, which in some situations would render certain wrestlers to be ineligible for the following Wednesday matches in the very same weight class in which they were legally allowed to weigh an additional pound.

I'm no lawyer but this almost seems like entrapment. Not to mention, counter productive to the very goal that  the OPC weight management is trying to instill in the first place.

Example:  106 pound, low body fat wrestler is allowed to lose .83 pounds per week. Enters  a two day tournament and weighs 106.0 on friday. Saturday weighs in at 106.9.  Not only can this kid not wrestle 106 for the upcoming wednesday match but he is also screwed for the following saturday.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here and I do realize these are rare situations but I suppose its possible and its definately something to think about.

Orange County Inv. (KG and COU) 12/3/11

Congratulations to both King George and Courtland for picking up a nice victory against Madison County. It was a great day of wrestling. Both of these teams are extremely young and will continue to experience there growing pains.

Mat Notes:
  • The facilities at Orange sure are a great place to have a wrestling tournament.
  • Oranges team is legit and certainly looks ready for there AAA commencement.
  • Great job to Andy Snyder(KG) going 5-0 for the day at 120.
  • I did not see Casey Wiseman(COU) in the lineup today.
  • I thought the KG coach splitting time with his younger wrestlers was brilliant. (18 wrestlers were able to pick up some great mat time.

CAR, CUL, EV, KG Quad 11/30/11

I apologise for some lacking info but it is extremely difficult to watch 2 mats having your own kid on one of them, two little ones in the stands, and a wife that won't shut up because she knows every thing about wrestling and wants to voice it!.

Some mat notes:

  • Culpeper- you need to learn how to do weigh-ins. Culpeper and Eastern View were literally done warming up before King George was even allowed to weigh-in. Ok, with that being said the quad went smooth and exciting and I love the Culpeper County people.  Alot of passion in that gym was well worth the six bucks.
  • Caroline has added a very nice pick up in Naquan Smith from Spotsylvania. He looked great and obviously went to a leg riding camp. He slipped passed me at first because of  being listed as Donald Harris-Smith.  My given name is Byron. Shhh! Don't tell anyone.
  • It is very obvious how important having a feeder system is.
  • The Jenkins/Engh match up was great.
  • Eastern View looks very tough. I still think they might be the underdog vs Chancellor but its only a matter of time. Time in which they don't have considering EV and Culpeper are exiting(2013) to face off against the two schools in which I was closest too Brentsville(Alum) and Manassas Park(coached). Have fun with that boys. ;)
  • 3 match winner:  106-Ramey(EV), 113-Quetsh(EV), 120-Aldiva(EV), 126-Willums(EV), 132-Pritt(EV), 138-Jenkins(EV), 145-Lynch(EV), 152-Shurina(EV), 160-Layher(EV), 170-Tucker(KG), 182-Willums(EV), 195-Teague(CAR), 220-Dejarnette(CUL), 285-Pollard(EV)
